Stop & Shop, Unionville, CT
Demolition and New Construction
Client • Stop & Shop Supermarkets
Architect • Landry Architects
Budget • $14M
Scope:
Demolition of existing buildings and new construction of an 8,000 sqft retail building and a 50,000 sqft supermarket.
Construction was performed in two phases:
• Phase One: The demolition and new construction of the retail building was designed to accomodate the exiting tenants and a new McDonald's restuarant.
• Phase Two: Demolition of an existing Stop & Shop Supermarket and construction of a new prototype store incorporating new, state of the art design criteria and floorplan.
Challenges:
Coordinating tenant relocations and leasing agreements were critical, both in maintaining retail operations and to minimize downtime. The site, which is located in a congested mercantile section in the center of downtown Unionville, was adjacent and within close proximity to the existing businesses that needed to remain in operation during construction. The increased level of hygiene, traffic and noise control was highly sensitive to town officials, residents and business owners throughout construction.
